Delorean - “Stay Close” (from Subiza, out June 8th)

I’m not usually one to have “bands of the summer” (as in “______ was THE band of the summer for me back in 1994!”), but as circumstances are rendering this impending summer a little different from others I’ve had in recent years, a “band of the summer” seems in order. Delorean’s pretty much shaping up to be that. Not a bad thing, really.

“Stay Close” just feels like hopeful to me, that heart-in-throat, anything’s-possible air that warm weather brings. It’s cartoonishly house-y, with that huge beat, druggy diva vox, and big, bangy pianos, but also has this focus on unadulterated sonic gorgeousness that brings it closer to the dancier end of shoegaze. I saw them at the Mercury Lounge not too long ago, and they were humble and Barcelonian and full of energy and they brought the goddamn house down. Play this song loud, late at night, and let yourself believe, just for a second, that this summer will be a little different from others - because that’s what bands of the summer are supposed to do, right?
