Context-less music is so hard to come by these days. When it does come along, I find myself just basking in it, giving thanks that the (relatively) private musical revelations of my adolescence can still, in fact, happen despite the internet’s high-pressure music cannon, which I’ve begun to liken to that scene in UHF when a little kid tries to drink from a firehose.

This song came to me this weekend via a new friend with good taste. I can find next to nothing about this Jai Paul guy on the internet, and, in truth, I haven’t tried all that hard to research him because I’ve been stewing in the rare pleasure that is good music on its own terms. “BTSTU” is beautiful and disorienting, a mix of R&B, side-chain compression’d synths, Dirty Projectors-y backing vocals, and unfathomably sexy atmosphere. It sounds… thick, seductive, freaky, all the thing good R&B should be. Who is this guy? Do I even care?

Wait for the saxophones at the very end, it’s worth it.
