Dennis Wilson - River Song

Dennis Wilson - “River Song” (from Pacific Ocean Blue, 1977)

This is one of those songs that’s a lot weirder and more magical than it seems at first. It sounds like “classic rock,” sure, but here are some things to notice:

1) No section during “River Song“‘s 3:48 ever repeats. It’s through-composed, built to start somewhere, end somewhere else, and visit only new territory in the time between.

2) The use of piano in the low-end is incredibly dramatic and stirring.

3) Those ladies in the background - and actually the entire hundred-person backing choir, now that i think about it - are going nuts.

4) Dennis Wilson, brother of that guy Brian, sounds exactly like the Grizzled Late-’70s Dude he appears to be. That’s some soul, right there.

5) Seriously, what is this thing? It’s like “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” meets modern classical or something.

6) Just listen to the way its recorded - people say shit like this all the time, but man, they don’t make records like they used.

(Also, does Spoon quote that “do it, do it, dooo” line at the end in “All the Pretty Girls Go to the City”? I think they do. Bless those nerds.)
