Mux Mool - 07 Get Better John

So, for my day job, I write copy for record labels. I write about other bands, and other artists, and tee-shirts, and albums, and singles, and tours, and so forth. It’s a living, and I  enjoy it - both for the work in and of itself and for the flexibility the work affords me. This means, of course, that retarded amounts of music slide across my desk on a daily basis, and i need to find something nice to say about all of it. Sometimes it’s easy; sometimes it’s not easy at all.

Mux Mool (aka Brian Lindgren) made it easy for me. He’s on Ghostly International, a truly extraordinary label (and my main client), and he makes beat-based music… you could call it instrumental hip-hop, but that’s a sort of lame/limiting/embarrassing term. “Get Better John” is my personal favorite track of Mux’s - a two-ton beat, piles of tubular-sounding synthesizers, and real, serious, classic-ass melody. It’s got an undertone of ’90s R&B in there, too, which gives it that happy/sad mood i’m always looking for. Brian’s a fascinating guy, too - incredibly prolific and creative, cops to living mostly on energy drinks. Although our music couldn’t be more different, I identify with this guy in a way I can’t quite define… or maybe I just think his beats are dope.

Mux is a hell of a doodler, too.
