“Day of the Deadringers” by Mclusky (from Mclusky Do Dallas, 2002)
I got a new tattoo this week. (It’s not the one pictured above, as much as I wish it was.) It’s an octopus covering my left shoulder, and it’s fucking beautiful. You can see a shitty picture of it here, but feel free to ask me about it in person and I’ll gladly take my shirt off for you.
While I was receiving said tattoo, I ended up talking about Jesus Lizard with the round, friendly nerd who was sticking needles in my shoulder. I’d never really gotten into the ‘Liz (do people call them that?), but they were playing on the stereo and maybe it was the endorphins but they just sounded awesome to me. As most conversations about Jesus Lizard do, talk eventually turned to Welsh band Mclusky, who made one of my favorite angry/hilarious Albini-produced records of the early 2000s, Mclusky Do Dallas. Suffice it to say that Mclusky are very aggressive, very funny, a little arty, and just a little bit desperate/sad in a way that reminds of Pixies and punk rock and, yes, the ‘Liz. I realized I needed to share one of Mclusky’s songs with you, because really, this shit just rocks in the best way it is possible to rock. Enjoy. Rock.
